KRISHNA DISTRICT

Headquarters: Machilipatnam

Krishna District is a district of India’s Andhra Pradesh state. It is named after the Krishna River which flows through the district. Machilipatnam is the administrative headquarters of the district. The district was situated between 80º 01′ and 81º 33’E, of the eastern longitudes and 15º 45′ and 17º 10’N, of northern latitudes. The Boundaries of this district are West Godavari district in the East, Bay of Bengal in the South, Guntur and Nalgonda districts in the West and Khammam district in the North directions. The district has population of 45,29,009 as per the 2011 census which accounts for 5.34% of the total population of the State with 8.15% decadal growth.

TOURISM in KRISHNA District

1. Kanaka Durga Temple

Kanaka Durga Temple is a famous hindu Temple of Goddess Durga located in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The temple is located on the Indrakeeladri hill, on the banks of Krishna River. Kaalika puraana, Durgaa sapthashati and other vedic literature have mentioned about Goddess Kanaka Durga on the Indrakeelaadri and have described the deity as Swayambhu, (self-manifested) in Triteeya kalpa.

Special pujas are performed during Dasara also called Navaratri. The most significant are Saraswati puja and Theppotsavam.

The festival of Dasara for Goddess "Durga" is celebrated here every year. A large number of pilgrims attend the colourful celebrations and take a holy dip in the Krishna river.

Railway station service to Vijayawada

Situated along the Chennai- Howrah and Chennai-Delhi rail route, this is the largest railway junction of the South Central Railway. There are a number of express and super fast trains that connect Vijayawada with almost all the important places of the country.

Airport service to Vijayawada

The domestic airport located at Gannavaram, about 20-km, from the city connects Vijayawada to Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam. It’s about a 30-minute flight from Hyderabad.

Road service to Vijayawada

Good motorable roads connect Vijayawada with all the places within the state and also with the major cities in India. Transport by road from Vijayawada to all the places of Buddhist interest is available in the form of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses.

2. Gandhi Hill

The Gandhi Hill (elevation 500 ft (150 m)) is a popular hill and tourist attraction in Vijayawada. It is located behind the Vijayawada railway station in the Tarapet neighbourhood. A Gandhi Memorial, built on this hill, is the first in the country to have seven stupas. The hill is also popularly known by the name of Gandhi. The hill was formerly known as ORR hill.

3. Mogalarajapuram caves

Mogalarajapuram Caves, situated near Vijayawada is well-known for the three cave temples and is said to be as old as 5th century AD. One of the three cave temples carries an impressive carving of ‘Ardhanariswara’ which is known as one of its kind in south India. This cave temple has carved deities of Lord Vinayaka and Lord Shiva in Nataraja form and hence, is one of the major Vijayawada attractions. This is a very attractive and antique temple to visit and to observe the ancient standard of living.

4. Mary Matha Church - Gunadala

One of the most popular churches and pilgrim places for Christians in Andhra Pradesh, A shrine for the Christians situated in Gunadala, a hilly region of district Krishna at Vijayawada is the Mary Matha Shrine or Gunadala Matha Shrine and its more popular name, St Mary's Church. It has the rare distinction of having an iron cross set up on the hill top. It houses a museum having a collection of ancient holy relics and precious gifts of the followers. The shrine is filled on Sundays and other important festivals and occasions. The annual feast for Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated with devotion and gaiety.its a famous pilgrimage place where people take the help of Mother Mary's prayers and lakhs of people come from all over places to worship, every February 9,10&11 more than 5 lakh people come to visit at the hill top.there r only steps way to go up the hill,and on the top there is a huge Jesus crucified statue.

Why and when Established Mother Mary

Mother Mary is said to have appeared on this hill as on 11th Feb.1858. In 1925, Rf. Arlati, the Rector of St. Joseph's Orphanage at Gunadala, installed a statue of Our Lady and later a church was built and consecrated in 1971, now popularly known as St. Mary's church. Since then the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became an annual event here. The church is situated on a hillock on the eastern side of the city. Every year an annual feast is observed to celebrate this event with much fanfare. An iron cross, erected at the top of the hill stands as a rare distinction of the shrine.Annual Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ Mother Mary attracts many devotees and is celebrated with much enthusiasm and devotion. Many believers throng to this place during Sundays and important occasions.A museum inside the church is another attraction, with collection of valuable gifts from devotees and holy relics of ancient period.

Gunadala Matha Festival

Gunadala Matha Festival was Celebrated every year in the month of February 9th to 11th, more than 10 Lakh devotees attend this festival and everything goes well without any problem. Officially says 60% were Catholics and Christians used to participate in the Feast and along with them remaining people from different religions Hindus and Muslims.The people from other states of the country and some foreigners also used to visit the church at the time feast and in normal days.

Festival starts with Holy mass on 9th Feb at 6.30 AM and around 8.30 AM Adoration Starts and ends on 11th Feb late night. Many Religious ( Sisters or nuns, Priests, Deacons, Brothers, Seminary & Convent students), General devotees from Vijayawada and other parts of AP, out of A.p also takes part in this Adoration along with Jesus Youth of Vijayawada Diocese.

5. Bhavani Island

Bhavani Island with a total area of 130 acres is situated in the middle of river Krishna. Journey to the island by boat is a very pleasant experience. An ideal place for picnics and other special occasions. This island is under the control of APTDC. Meetings and marriages can also organized on this island with prior permission.

6. Victoria Museum

This museum has a well preserved collection of ancient sculptures, painting, idols, weapons, cutlery and inscriptions of Queen Victoria. It is located on Bunder Road of Vijayawada City.

7. Kondapalli Fort

This 7th Century Fort on the hill with an impressive three storied rock tower has witnessed the glory of many dynasties. It served a business center in olden days. The fort was used as a military training base by the British rulers. It is now a good picnic spot. Kondapalli village is situated 16 kms from Vijayawada. The village is famous for toys made with a special wood that's found on the hills here. These toys are famous the world over as 'Kondapalli Toys'.

8. Kuchipudi

Located about 60 kms away from Vijayawada, this is the birth place of Siddhendra Yogi, the originator of the classical Kuchipudi dance form. A dance school by the name Siddhendra kalakshetram trains many students every year, promoting the Kuchipudi dance form.

9. Manginapudi Beach

Manginapudi Beach is located at 11 kms from Machilipatnam in Krishna District, 85 kms away from Vijayawada. It was once an important trading center and a gateway to India. Manginapudi Beach has black soil instead of sands. It is a historic port city, popular health resort and an ideal place for beach lovers. 11. Prakasam Barrage

The imposing Prakasam Barrage, across the river Krishna is 1223.5 mt long. A pleasant walk down the barrage with the gentle breeze on your face and a beautiful view of the shimmering lake can be a great way to spend your evening. Andhra Pradesh largely owes its richness in agriculture to the Prakasam Barrage as the project has helped in the irrigation of lakhs of acres of agricultural lands.
