GUNTUR DISTRICT

Guntur is a centre of education & learning and is home of historically significant Amaravati, Bhattiprolu and Sitanagaram monuments. The district was situated between 79º 10′ and 80º 55’E, of the eastern longitudes and 15º 18′ and 16º 50’N, of northern latitudes. The district is bounded on the southeast by the Bay of Bengal, on the south by Prakasam District, on the west by Mahabubnagar District, and on the northwest by Nalgonda District. The district has population of 48,89,230 as per the 2011 census which accounts for 5.77% of the total population of the State with 9.50% decadal growth.

TOURISM in Guntur District

1. AMARAVATHI

Amaravathi is a well known historical town of and center for pilgrimage for both Hindus and Buddhist, located on the south bank of river Krishna in Sattenapalli taluk around 60 km from Guntur district of Andra Pradesh, India. The major attractions are carved temple dedicated to lord Shiva, 2000 year old Buddhist settlements and monuments and an Archeological Museum. This ancient city has its unique record in history dated 2nd century BC and was a capital of Andra Pradesh. It is a center of Buddhist art was one of the three major art school in ancient India. The sacred river Krishna is held in reverence at this pilgrimage and ablution in this river is considered holy and meritorious among Hindus. This town gained its popularity during the period of King Ashoka. 'Hills of Lamps' and 'Abode of God' are the other names of Amaravathi. Excavations done by Archeologists and European scholars were unearthed several rare Dravidian style sculptures.

PLACES TO VISIT AMARAVATHI

Amareshwara Temple:

Amaravathi is famous for the Amareshwara Temple, the holy shrine of Lord Shiva, located 60 km west to Vijayawada. It is located on a hillock called ' Krouncha Saila' alongside of river Krishna on the southeastern side of Srisailam Temple. Shiva is the male embodiment of power is called as 'Amareshwara' and goddess is referred as 'Bala Chamundi' and there are also several other deities. 15 feet high white marble lingam is the center of attraction. It is one of the five holy shrine (Pancharama) of Lord Shiva which is surrounded by massive walls and decorated by four lofty gopuram. The inscriptions on the temple walls are the evident of historical events. Mahashivarathri and Navarathri are the major carnivals celebrated here. In 2006, the famous Buddhist ritual 'Kalachakra' (Time-Wheel) – a type meditation practice initiation was conducted here by Dalai Lama of Tibet.

Temple is usually closed in noon. Visiting in the morning and evening are regularly performed here.

Buddhist Stupa:

Buddhist Stupa of Amaravathi is India's biggest heap, built on 3rd century BC, measuring 27 meter in height and 50 meters in diameter. It assures great site seeing for archeology lover. It was the important worship place of Buddhist, built with bricks in a circular or drum shape, covered with sculptured slabs and carved panels which denotes the ancient Buddhist life. The rectangular shape platforms of this Stupa is projecting into four cardinal directions measuring 7.20 X 2.10 meters each. During decline of Buddhism, this Stupa is buried and neglected. Many sculptures of this Stupa are now in some acclaimed museums of India, Germany and London.

Archeological Museum:

This Meuse has the replica of the Buddhist Stupa. It displays many carved sculptures of Stupa, 'Amaravathi' art works, sketches and drawings and depicts coins made of gold, silver and lead which are used in historic days.

3. Ethipothala Waterfalls

Ethipothala Falls is a 70 feet (21 m) high river cascade, situated in Guntur district,Andhra Pradesh India. Located on the Chandravanka river, which is a tributary of River Krishna joining on its right bank. The waterfall is a combination of three streams namely Chandravanka Vagu, Nakkala Vagu and Tummala Vagu. It is situated about 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam. The river then joins the Krishna River after the dam after travelling about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from the falls. A strategic view point was created by Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department from the adjacent hillock. There are Ranganatha and Dattatreya temples in the vicinity. There is a crocodile breeding centre in the pond formed by the water fall. Water from the Nagarjuna Sagar right bank canal is released in to the above streams to keep the water fall alive or flowing throughout the year for tourism purpose.

4. Guthikonda Caves

Guthikonda Bilam is a natural cave formation. The Cave is situated close to Karampudi, 38 km from Narasaraopet enroute from Hyderabad/Nagarjuna Sagar/Macherla.Guthikonda caves are located amidst dense forest. The environment here is serene and legend has it that many Rishis meditated here for centuries. The place is also popularly known as Dakshina Kasi. The famous Guthikonda Bilam is still a place of deep mystery attracting the intrepid and curious tourist to explore. It is unfortunate that not much popularity is given to this place. How to reach there : Just a kilometer before the Village Guthikonda there exists Krishna canal. Travel for 2 km On the Right Bank of the canal to the end and from there a another km to walk to reach the place.

On the way to the Cave at foot to the Bilam one can see martyrs' memorial of People's War (Stupam). On the Stupam we can see Charu muzumdars picture.Further ahead the cave is sorrounded by temples on the little hill.

The Cave has an entrance built with an arch and has electric lighting too. People who live in the temple beside guide you into the cave. At the summit there is water deep within the cave.

5. Kondaveedu Fort

Kondaveedu Fort is to be found at a distance of 25 km from Guntur. Kondaveedu fort was built by Anapotha Reddy in the 1250 A.D and later developed by Ana Venkata Reddy. Both of them were prominent rulers of the Reddy dynasty known to be benevolent patrons of the art and culture. Later, the fort considered as impregnable with 24 bastions and spread across 30 hillocks was ruled by Gajapathis.

6. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is one of the largest dams built in Asia. The tallest masonry Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is certainly the pride of India, This colossal dam supplies water for irrigation purposes to the districts like Nalgonda, Prakasam, Khammam and Guntur in Andhra Pradesh catchment area of 215000 sq km (83012 mi) . And is one of the largest networks of canal systems.This mighty Nagarjuna dam, which was completed in 1969, owing to its confounding height of 124 meters, and 1 km long, and has 26 crest gates. Nagarjunasagar Dam can store up to 11, 472 million cubic meters in its reservoir.

7. Undavalli Caves

The Undavalli Caves is an example of Indian rock-cut architecture, are located in the village of Undavalli in Tadepalli Mandal in Guntur District, near the southern bank of Krishna river, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The caves are located 6 km south west from Vijayawada, 22 km north west of Guntur City and about 280 km from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.

8. Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary

Uppalapadu is a place of bird migration and a village near Guntur City. It is also a reputed bird sanctuary. Home to around 40 species of migratory birds from Siberia including pelicans and white ibis, this sanctuary is equivalent to Pulicat Sanctuary in Nellore District.
